EMDR

I have been trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an integrative therapy approach that helps individuals cope with and heal from symptoms of PTSD / trauma and emotional distress. When a traumatic or adverse life event occurs, the experience can be so disturbing that it is stored in the brain with the same cognitions, emotions and body sensations that were felt at the time of the event. The memory remains unprocessed or unresolved. Triggers reactivate these thoughts, feelings and sensations and can cause significant distress.

Through the use of bilateral stimulation in EMDR therapy, the painful memory is reprocessed and connected to adaptive and functional memory networks.  The therapist is the guide, however, it is one’s own brain that is doing the healing.  EMDR therapy facilitates appropriately placing the event in the past, rather than re-experiencing it in the present.  Ongoing research has indicated that EMDR therapy can be effective in the treatment of anxiety, depression, panic attacks, grief, disturbing memories, phobias and stress reduction.

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING

Trained as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I offer a form of body-centered therapy utilized in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Though it is important to understand thought processes and patterns, the body has a mind of its own and unconsciously affects emotions.

After a person experiences a traumatic event, a natural survival response in the form of orienting, fight, flight or "freeze" may not have been completed; tension may not have been fully released from the body.  This can lead to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). One may feel a heightened state of anxiety, or feel numb / shut down. Reactions to every day stressors may become extreme, and an ability to cope with them can feel impossible. One may notice that talk therapy only exacerbates the symptoms. Somatic Experiencing helps to regulate the arousal within the body, builds a capacity to tolerate discomfort, and decreases symptoms related to trauma.

If treating shock trauma, therapy may be short term.  For developmental / emotional trauma, SE is helpful when used in conjunction with traditional psychotherapy.
